Ampeg was founded in 1946 by pianist and bass player Everette Hull, who partnered with Stanley Michaels to create a new microphone pickup. Hull’s design, called the Amplified Peg or “Ampeg,” fit on the end of an upright bass.
In 1949, Hull became the sole owner and renamed the company Ampeg Bassamp Company. Since then, the brand has produced innovative products that meet the needs of musicians worldwide. Many feature unique designs and performance capabilities, earning six U.S. patents under the name.
